i just got back from 2 days in vegas for work in one of the fancy hotels on the strip. while there wasnt quite as much madness there as usual, there are definitely people out and about in vegas trying to satisfy their urges. for some people, its gambling, others its ladies (or guys), and others its drinking or drugs, some people are addicted to looking like they’re rich - and on and on.
the only time i left the room (other than to work and to eat at the place that has the best thai food that i’ve ever eaten) was to go to speedvegas and pull a few laps. i’d previously been to dream racing in the same car and while the tracks are different, all of the vegas racing places seem to have nice facilities, good in car coaches, etc.
because i know that i’m no hero and that racing is a skill best developed with something closer to the limits of your ability, i took out the cayman gts and not a gt500, gallardo, 911 gt3 or any of the other fancypants cars they had available. that car is here:
i managed to turn a lap in 1:14.53 which im told is a pretty decent laptime there, also managed to throw the cayman into a slight *but very real* drift in a different lap, which the instructor promptly corrected from the passenger side (damn you, mid engine chassis dynamics and my feet being too abrupt on/off pedal at speed). a pair of other laps were great until mixing up the upshift and the downshift floppy paddles (damn you, me driving a stick and being utterly not used to using said paddles).
in any case, that was the quickest $250 i could possibly imagine spending and i wouldnt imagine it any other way.
10/10 would do again.

The turn-in response of a mid-engine car is incredible. I’ve been hooked for 10 years now and I don’t see it changing.

Not really understanding the allure of gambling, I never thought there was any reason to take myself to Vegas. But you’re telling me there’s a bunch of these race tracks?! How much time/laps did $250 get you?

I've thought about doing one of those track day experiences before. I'd of course want to start off with the "slow" car but by "slow" I mean not actively trying to kill me. How many laps did you get?

ahh, i thought you meant the gts specifically. i
daily an m240i, but
perhaps if i had a suv/beater daily one day i’d consider a much more base model.

they price it by car and by lap. technically the rack rate on 5 laps of cayman gts was $159 but i tipped the dude a bit and wanted to buy my video w/telemetry so that with ta ended up much close to $250. at just over a minute a lap, something like $45 a minute. still would pay.

you can do as little as 1 which is useless cause youre not even flying into a full lap. i did 5, if i were feeling a little less frugal due to covid id probably have done the 7 or 9 lap option.

oh dont get me wrong, it was amazing. but i really didnt appreciate how much lift off oversteer was a thing in a not front engined car.

Oh nice! But even though the GTS has some other goodies, I matched it's hp with a cobb on my S and there's lots more you can do over time if you keep a Cayman around.

If you compare it to a theme park where you get to stand in line for 2 hours then ride some fancy train tracks for 45 seconds, I’d say it’s worth it.

5 sounds like a good number but at 7 you'd really be getting to know the track. 5 laps for $250 or around $30 a lap isn't that bad at all.
